To understand insulation, let us examine it in its most contained form–the esky. An esky is basically a box designed to keep drinks cold on a hot day, and since an esky is generally well insulated–it tends to be great at doing its job. In general, materials are either conductive or non-conductive, meaning that heat can easily or non-easily pass through it. The material that insulates an esky is non-conductive, meaning that it is difficult for heat to pass through it, which explains why your drinks stay cold for hours even when its heating up outside.

On the contrary, there are materials that are great at conducting heat, and serve their own purposes. An example of this is a kettle.
