The Australian shed is a place where we spend many hours working on a project, exercising or working from your home office. By insulating your shed, you can enhance the comfort of your work space and reduce the energy needed for heating or cooling.

Shed insulation will increase the usefulness of your shed. It will keep your shed, garden shed, workshop, office or garage cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, making it more comfortable and convenient for all your shed activities.

Shed Ceiling Insulation

Insulating your shed’s ceiling is crucial. A significant portion of the heat is absorbed by the metal roofing and is then radiated inward, increasing the internal temperature. By installing shed insulation to the shed roof the transfer of heat is slowed by reflecting the radiant heat away. Foilboard® reflects up to 97% of radiant heat acting as a radiant barrier which can reduce the temperature in the shed by up to 10 degrees. Additionally, Foilboard® decreases the speed of heat transfer through conduction by creating a thermal break, covering the metal purlins along with a sealed air cavity that increases insulation performance. The best type of insulation for a shed roof is rigid panel insulation such as Foilboard®. The product will not sag and does not need to be joined on a purlin, reducing waste. Installed with the silver side facing the interior of the garage will leave the shed with an attractive finish that will brighten your workspace.

Shed Door Insulation

Shed doors are often overlooked for insulation. Anywhere that is left uninsulated will make a large difference to the comfort level of the garage or shed. Using shed door insulation will reduce the radiant heat keeping the shed at optimum temperature levels to keep you motivated to get your project done.

Shed Floor

Shed floors can be insulated before the concrete is poured. Planning ahead will ensure the shed can be insulated to achieve maximum thermally efficiency. Expanded Polystyrene is an excellent material that will insulate the floor by being encased in the concrete when poured. Sheds floors can be retrofitted insulation by installing a floor on battens and fitting the insulation between the battens. Sheds that are constructed on stumps can be retrofitted with insulation. Foilboard® Rigid Panel insulation is an ideal solution as it will not sag and provides complete floor sealing while protecting against moisture migration.

Shed Insulation for a wall

Like shed ceilings the wall is a large area that is capable of raising temperatures in your shed work space. Using Foilboard® as shed wall insulation will improve the comfort by reducing the transfer of heat by radiation, conduction and convection. Foilboard® Rigid panel insulation will not sag so can be placed between the wall girts allowing for the wall to be internally cladded.

What is Shed Insulation?

Foilboard® Shed insulation is a rigid sheet of EPS laminated on both sides with Aluminium foil. One side is antiglare green to protect the eyes for those installs that are outside in the sun light and the other side silver. Both sides work as radiant barriers, that is it reflects away heat. The Expanded Polystyrene core reduces the transfer by conduction and the two material together forming a tight seal reduce heat transfer by convection, which is the moving of air between the inside and outside of the shed.

How Does Shed Insulation Work?

Foilboard® Shed insulation works by reducing heat transfer through the existing structure. Steel is well known to be an excellent conductor of heat and will transfer that heat in or out of the shed by thermal bridging if not insulated. Foilboard® insulation panels insulate the steel by creating a thermal break, a disruption of the thermal bridge. Foilboard® also provides a radiant barrier that will reflect the radiant heat absorbed by the metal cladding and radiated inside. Conversely, if the shed is heated the insulation will reduce the heat transfer from inside to outside. Heat always travels to cold, so by creating a seal the insulation can reduce the amount of air transfer making the shed more comfortable for longer.

How To Install Shed Insulation

Foilboard® shed insulation is an easy DIY install to any shed. The best way to install the walls is to friction fit the panels between the wall girts. By using a spacer block you can achieve a uniform airspace that will increase the performance of the Foilboard® by activating the radiant barrier. By installing between the wall girts, the wall can be internally cladded with a shadow board for example or hooks and shelves installed to the wall girts for storage. The silver side should be installed visible to the internal side. This will give great aesthetics and create a brighter work space. Join with Foilboard® silver tape.

For the shed ceiling Foilboard® is installed to the underside of the roof purlins. This provides the airspace that will add performance from the radiant barrier. With heat trying to get in, the greater the airspace the greater the thermal resistance. Using Foilboard® Ultra steel or Timber Screw to attach to the underside of the purlins. There is no need to join on a purlin, the Foilboard® is rigid enough to span and join with Foilboard®Silver Tape. Foilboard® recommends Green 20 as a minimum for shed applications.

Shed Insulation FAQ's

  • What is the best insulation for a shed?

The best insulation for a shed is on that uses a reflective insulation with a rigid insulation. This insulation will not sag, is easily cut to size, and is easily joined using insulation tape. Foilboard® recommends Green 20, the 20mm Foilboard® as a minimum to span the distance between purlins for most sheds.

  • Why is shed insulation important?

If you work in your shed in summer or winter, you will know it get unbearably hot or as cold as the outside temperature. By using Foilboard® insulation, the temperature can be moderated without using any heating or cooling.

  • Is it worth insulating a shed?

It is worth asking yourself what it is worth to have an extra space or a work area that is comfortable to work in. Insulation is an inexpensive way to improve the comfort of a shed without having to complete a full renovation with frame and plaster. Shed insulation will allow you to spend more time in your shed to get those projects done or an extra space for a home office.

  • How much will it cost to insulate a shed?

Foilboard® Green 20 ranges from $11-17/m2. Work out how many square metres are required by multiplying the length x width x height and take out any areas that are not to be insulated. E.g. windows. It is the same process for the roof. Do not insulate under skylights.

  • Should I insulate my shed ceiling?

The shed ceiling is one of the two most important areas to insulate. The heat that radiates off the roof has a huge affect on the temperature inside the shed. Conversely, if the shed is being heated, the heat rises and is being lost through the roof. Insulating the roof will make a huge difference to the temperature swing and create a much more comfortable space and save energy and money on heating and cooling bills.

  • Will insulation keep my shed cool?

Insulating your shed will keep it cooler on those hot days by reflecting away the heat that radiates in from the outside. By insulating the shed temperature can be reduced significantly.

  • How do I stop condensation in my shed?

Foilboard® can reduce the condensation in the shed by creating a thermal break between the metal cladding and the internal air. Air can hold moisture, the warmer the air the more moisture can be suspended. When this air cools it reaches the dew point, which is the temperature condensation forms. The insulation between the warm air and the cold metal cladding can reduce the condensation by separating the warm air and cold surface with a closed cell material. Condensation cannot form within the closed cell insulation.

  • Should I leave an air gap when insulating a shed?

Leaving an airspace between the metal cladding/roofing and the insulation will allow the radiant barrier to work more effectively. The foil laminate reflects up to 97% of the radiant heat from the roof and walls. The insulation will still provide thermal resistance without the airspace but will always perform more efficiently with the airspace.
